Genres, audiences and institutions

Why is genre a relevant concept for audiences?

Genre is a helpful tool for audiences to know before watching a film, the pre-conceived ideas of a genre guides the audience to whether they would want to watch that film or not. Also, certain genres are only suitable for certain demographics; for instance, only children and teenagers would want to watch teenage films as they are relatable for them and could be considered uninteresting for older audiences. Additionally, parents will know that a teenage film will be suitable or not for their children.

How does genre effect film production companies?

Different genres tend to have different casts, settings and requirements therefore the budgets can vary greatly. With adventure films the production company would need a lager budget as they would be shooting on location, requiring perhaps post-production special effects, and have connections to cast members who are known for adventure films and also have a background doing action centred shots.

Why is genre useful for distribution companies?

Genre is useful for distribution companies as it guides them how to market and advertise a film.
