Introduction to Genre

Genre is a style or category of art, music, or literature. But more specifically in film, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. An example of genre is Comedy, a typical comedy film is 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' which is about “a Hotshot television anchorman Ron Burgundy welcomes upstart reporter Veronica Corningstone into the male-dominated world of 1970s broadcast news”. Other common film genres include action and adventure, Thriller, War, Romance and Crime. When films are within the same genre certain aspects are generally kept the same; for instance setting, in a teenage film the setting is often at a school, shopping mall or another location teenagers can relate to; characters and spheres of action, in a romance film there are stereotypically two lovers; and themes are kept in same, in musicals there are themes of celebration, tension of dancing and singing and entertainment.
