What is an opening sequence?

A vital factor of an opening sequence is to establish a tone appropriate for the given film to mold the mood of the audience in preparation of the film.

Often opening and title sequences are amalgamated together however the purposes of the sequences differ greatly.

An opening sequence...

-Presents mood and tone of the film

-Includes a narration which sets up the audience intrigued about the characters/issues/organisations etc.
-Establishes the environment and introduces the status of the possible characters
-Communicates a theme
-Creates enigma

A title sequence...

-Presents the creators and key people who were involved in making the film

-Includes  people named here who are key selling factors of the film hence excites the audience for directors/actors etc.

In an opening sequence the film makers never allow too much of the plot to be revealed instead allows the audience to ask questions about the possibilities of the film intriguing them to watch further.
