Idea 1 // Ben Howard- ‘I forget where we were’

Developing music video ideas

Ben Howard- ‘I forget where we were’

Ben Howard is a fast arising award winning 28-year-old indie singer songwriter from Devon, he is self described as a ‘keen surfer’ and in fact in the past performed a series of beachside gigs in aid of keeping Britain's shores "barefoot-friendly". His music is comparable to acts such as Bon Iver, James Bay and Mumford and Sons.

The music videos narrative evolves around a young lower middle class male character reflecting on a antisocial past which ultimately results in his relationship with his mother disintegrating.

The video would be structured around the lead male approaching a remote rural location, once arrived he would take out a verity of objects within his bag eg. Old family photos, stolen goods etc, each linking to negative memories, he would then proceed to throw each object into a bonfire at twilight. The video would open with two silhouettes against the bonfire and ending with only one silhouette resembling the leads new life starting afresh.

The video would consistently alternate between shots from the past and present displaying the contrast of a fast and slow pace of life. The shots in the rural setting would complement the slower pace of the song yet the contrast between the past the pace of the song would indicate the characters sense remorse and the distance he had put between himself and the past.

The video would be set entirely on location to reflect the rawness of the narrative enforcing the reality of everyday relationships disintegrating.  In the close ups of the lead would display him lip-syncing the lyrics of the song.

I would prefer to avoid using stereotypes of antisocial behaviour within the working class, so instead use the idea that the lead had been living comfortably but had been lead astray by peers.
